Former AFL footballer Paul Brown was assaulted in Shepparton on Friday night, after trying to help a young woman in distress.

Brown attempted to assist the young woman, who herself was involved in an altercation on the street. After intervening, a 19 year-old Shepparton man punched Brown, who feel backwards and struck his head on the pavement. The 19 year-old will face the Shepparton Magistrates Court on January 11.

Brown, who played in the Cats' consecutive Grand Final campaigns in 1994 and 1995, has shown signs of recovery after being hospitalised with bleeding on the brain and a fractured skull.
