After yet another brutal season, the New York Jets will be making some major changes this offseason. Contrary to popular belief, though, it may not be coach Rex Ryan who takes the fall.
Jets owner Woody Johnson is expected to fire embattled General Manager John Idizik sometime after today’s regular season finale, and will leave the fate of Ryan in the hands of whoever succeeds Idzik. The GM’s two year stint has been marked by poor performance on the field and some befuddling decisions off it, with none more divisive than the decision to hand the quarterback reins over to the underachieving Geno Smith.
Ryan has actually cleaned out his desk already, even though he has not been given any indication that he is being fired. Given how much the players seem to like him and the incredible lack of talent he seemingly has to work with, it’s not all that far-fetched a new GM may want to keep him.
UPDATE: ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that both Idzik and Ryan are about to be out of a job:
Jets owner Woody Johnson will move swiftly Monday to fire both John Idzik and Rex Ryan, per sources. Johnson won't keep Ryan hanging on fate
