BIRTH NAME: Richard Michael Gossage

YEARS ACTIVE: 1972-1994

TEAM(S): Chicago White Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Yankees, San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Texas Rangers, Oakland A's, Seattle Mariners

One of the first to define the role of the modern closer, Gossage made nine All-Star teams (including one as a starter), closed out seven postseason series, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2008. He got his nickname for being a really pretty guy who flew off the handle when anybody got near him. No, it's not that? How about because he was really pretty but left scat everywhere? Not that either, huh? You say his nickname is just an alliterative play on his last name? Well that's kinda boring.
