The Daytona Beach News Journal reports that that a man by the name of Kyle Gullo has been caught with a massive stash of stolen sneakers after an investigation that began when he fired a handgun at an undercover police officer.

On June 17, Gullo shot at the officer and was arrested after a high speed chase. The officer was unharmed, but Gullo's reasoning behind the shooting led to an unexpected discovery. He claimed that he was worried about his child, who was staying with his girlfriend at their Daytona Beach condo. When cops arrived, Gullo's girlfriend told them she had "never even seen" the child.

What they did find was an impressive stockpile of Nike sneakers and hats. Police found this particularly compelling because Gullo's older brother's girlfriend, Kaitlyn Warnock, had reported a sneaker theft from a storage unit on June 15. According to Warnock, somewhere between 800-1,000 sneakers were stolen with an estimated value of $75,000.

But after searching Gullo's condo, police were only able to find around 20 pairs of sneakers. Gullo's girlfriend told police that he had already sold 10 of the pairs for $5,000 and that she had heard him on the phone attempting to sell more. Later, the girlfriend claimed that police forced her to make the statement and that it wasn't true.

Meanwhile, the police chief says Gullo's mother claimed the sneakers belonged to her. "When I asked her for receipts, she didn’t have any," he said.
