What Sneakerheads Wear on Lazy Sundays

Sundays are my fun days, so I tend to relax in one of my old favorites: the Nike Dunk. As a skater, I started collecting Dunks and Vans before I ever fell in love with Jordans. They have always been my go-to sneaker for all occasions, including football games on Sunday nights.

​I'm really particular about what I'm wearing with my bottoms. If I have on shorts, then I cannot wear high-top shoes. If I have on sweats, they must be runners, if I have on jeans, they have to be able to be pin-rolled or cuffed properly around my sneaker. If I'm wearing slides around the house, I can go without socks, but if I do go somewhere, I have to have a pair of crew socks to accompany my slides. So, by my door is a coat closet with various pairs of kick around sneakers. Some old Air Max, a pair of Pumas, Nike slides, Jordans, and a New Balance model. So when I have to run some errands, it really isn't about the shoe I'm leaving with, it's about the pants that I have on.

Your lazy Sunday kicks should be a shoe that's either comfortable or, more accurately, beaters that you don't really mind getting fucked up. It should be a sneaker that you don't have to think twice wearing out of the house, because they are the designated pair to do shit in on off hours. And for me, that honor goes to my overwashed Vans Authentics. They didn't start out as beaters, they were just the perfect inexpensive yet stylish sneaker that worked well with everything I owned. As I wore them more and more and they got dirtier every couple of weeks, I decided they were going to be the go-to weekend pair that I'd do everything in. There's nothing more you can really ask for.

The usual lazy Sunday for me consist of catching up on 2 weeks worth of DVR'd programs while I sink deeper and deeper into the couch. My shoe of choice at the moment is the white/ infrared Jordan VI slides. I throw them on to run out and grab food and snacks from the store, and I might also make a Red Box stop if I'm really energetic.

Lazy Sundays are the best kind of Sundays, and nothing is more lazy than a shoe I can just slip on. For a while, I'd always reach under the bed for my Sperry Topsiders, but with the fall season right around the corner, I've been slipping on the Clarks Wallabee more and more often. Whatever last Clarks uses to build the Wallabee makes it super comfortable—there's plenty of room in the toebox which makes it s nice release from retro Jordans or dress shoes during the week. Definitely my go-to sneaker for a lazy Sunday.

Lazy Sunday sneakers are part of any true sneakerhead's repertoire. There are rules to my lazy Sunday footwear, though. These shoes are for doing laundry, dogwalking, supermarket/bodega runs and maybe even a brunch spot, but they may not be worn outside of a six-block perimeter of the crib.

No bus or subway rides. No afternoon drives. No bike rides with bridge crossings.

You may choose to wear socks or no socks with your lazy Sunday shoes, but you are never allowed to tie them because tying shoes equals motivation, which means you've exceeded the effort level for a lazy Sunday

My Lazy Sunday kicks are these Nike Dunk Lows released for some world basketball wave. I wanna say these shoes rep for Uzbekistan because that would be swaggerful.

Two shoes that are always by the door are Birkenstock Bostons and the Fragment Benassis. The former are for anything that require walking a block or more, and the latter are simply house shoes. You know the ones, the type you slip on to get the mail or get the paper (yes, I still subscribe to the weekend NYT), or are just absolutely necessary when you wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom—because nothing wakes you up more than cold-ass tiles on your feet when it's 4 a.m. and you still want to get a few more hours of sleep. Bostons are a carryover from the #menswear peak when shit was getting mad weird but before dudes started prattling on about "rare hemlines" and A.P.C. Kanye was but a whisper. They're super comfortable though and I'll probably keep wearing them until I'm dead. I consider them a headstart on my old Asian man steez.

My pick for a Sunday sneaker is my Reebok x Palace Workout Low from last year. Super comfy on a silhouette that goes with pretty much anything whether that be denim of shorts, etc. I really like the subtle detail in the collab. The simple touches of embossed heel detail and super plush leather uppers on a great gum sole unit.

I strictly designate Sunday as my leisure day. The only time of the week where I specifically plan to not do shit but go to church and watch whatever sports are on TV in my underwear. No need to stunt in a fresh pair of sneakers when you're sitting in the living room by yourself, so my footwear of choice for lazy Sundays are Nike Elite Socks. They offer just enough support for me to walk to the kitchen and make a sandwich or do my laundry. Just how God intended.

My Sunday shoe has to be my Black cement IIIs. It's the shoe that got me started collecting, and, to me, the most comfy Jordan aside from the XI. It's the shoe that I can throw on with whatever, and it will go well. Plus, I always liked to just kick around in my IIIs since I like em better beat up.

A few Sundays ago, I was recovering from a Saturday of drinking a few beers and listening to music into wee hours of the morning. I woke up and threw on a pair of sweats and the Burn Rubber x Reebok Instapump Furys. For those that know me, sweatpants and Instapumps is an everyday occurrence, but there was something so Sunday about this particular combination. For starters, the Burb Rubbers are grey, mesh, a slip-on, and have a gum sole. They're so nondescript that they're remarkable for wearing on Sundays, and I might just wear these with socks more often just so I can prolong their Sunday wear.

Sundays are all about NFL Football, Tech sweats, Champion tees, and some comfortable runners for picking up that last minute order of wings and pizza. The go-to move when keeping it #TeamCozy this year has been Ronnie Fieg's latest "Cove" drop with ASICS. The colorway gets everyone's attention and the Gel Lyte V is one of the more comfortable non-Flyknits in my closet.

I prefer a simple black shoe if I leave the house. I don't have to worry about the weather or how my grandparents will react when I arrive at their place on a Sunday. They don't like my fancy shoes and my Stans are super—they fit all my outfits.

In 2010, scientists (yeah, actual scientists) discovered (through analysis of actual data and shit) that the Reebok Classic was the official shoe of British burglars. To those with any sociological acumen, the revelation wouldn't have surprised—Classics are, after all, not just celebrated by criminals, but by a large percentage of pub-going adults, too. Why? Simple, the Reebok Classic is an unfussy, comfortable sneaker suited to a variety of tasks and immune (in leather form) to the annoyances of rain. Thus, it is also well suited to weekends filled with multifaceted activity—brunch, grocery shopping, walking, etc. My friend Gary Warnett made a Classic in 2013 in ode to, naturally, criminals. He graciously let me add a detail, a black eyelet representing a borstal mark, so, naturally, it is the Classic I favor in wear.

Currently my go-to pair has been the adidas Pure Boost. I've worn them pretty much every day for two months now. I’d been meaning to try Boost for ages, but this was the first pair that grabbed my attention. Once you’ve taken your first step, you don’t want to take them off.

Admittedly, this year was the first time I took the plunge and started wearing slides. I was always the person who wore sneakers to the beach and my friends who weren't into sneakers would give me flack for it. When adidas allowed people to customize the adilette slides, I thought it was an awesome initiative. I remember when I played soccer growing up these were the go-to for all the kids who had some style about them, so I triple-blacked out a pair. I'm happy how they came out, and for my first real pair of sandals I think they were a good choice.

My favorite day of the week has forever been Sunday. And for me, I have totally contrasting feelings as to why. On one hand, the Sundays that we just past going through spring and summer were usually spent out and about, riding the bike, and finding something to get me enjoying the outdoor energy. For the fall season ahead, Sundays are lazy days. I rarely sleep in, but if I can on a Sunday, I will. I try to time it so I wake up no longer than half and hour before 1:00 p.m. kickoff times for the blitz of NFL games that take place throughout the day. I'm the type of football fan that prefers to be in complete solitude when watching, so I try not to leave the house too much. When I do, the Saucony Shadow 6000 Elite (Grey/Blue) are my go-to. I leave these laced as is at all times, and slip in and out of them as I need. Being that I spend my lazy days rooting for my New York Giants, I keep big blue on my mind as well as my feet.

Every Sunday, I wake up on a few hours sleep from the night before and throw on any shoes I can wear without socks. My rotation consists of the Air Max 90 Infrared Hyperfuse and the Air Max 90 Infrared Hyperfuse. I bought about 15 pairs and still cop whenever I can find them. It's definitely my go-to, especially when all I'll be doing is drinking more anyway.
