Monday brought some not-so-great news for the U.S. box office at large, with Hitman's Bodyguard leading the pack for a third weekend in a row during the worst Labor Day haul in nearly 20 years. For one of the summer's strongest films, however, this summer has been a victory.

Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman is now the fifth biggest superhero movie in history at the domestic box office, Mashablereported. Though the No. 4 film—The Dark Knight Rises—stands nearly $40 million higher than Wonder Woman, Jenkins' hit is unique in that it was able to open considerably lower than the rest of the top five before bringing in consistent box office dollars week after week. That staying power will bring Wonder Woman's total haul (after official Labor Day numbers are released) to somewhere in the neighborhood of $409 million, which is enough to oust previous No. 5 Iron Man 3.

Check out the full superhero top five below. As mentioned above, the Wonder Woman numbers may change slightly once final Labor Day numbers are tallied and confirmed:

  • Marvel's The Avengers - $623.3 million
  • The Dark Knight - $534.8 million
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron - $459 million
  • The Dark Knight Rises - $448.1 million
  • Wonder Woman - $409 (+) million

Back in July, Warner Bros. gave Wonder Woman 2 an official release date of Dec. 19, 2019. Star Gal Gadot has been confirmed as returning, but Jenkins' name was missing from the announcement. Last month, Deadlinereported that omission was due to Jenkins being in final talks for what insiders are calling an "historic deal" to return as the sequel's director.

"[The sequel] should be a totally different movie, but a grand and now full-blown Wonder Woman in the world," Jenkins, whose deal is expected to make her the highest-earning woman in the industry, later toldEntertainment Tonight
