Jeremy Renner Recalls Breaking His Arms While Shooting 'Tag' Stunt

'Tag' is somehow based on a real-life group of dudes who get together once a year for a remarkably intense game of tag. Even more remarkably, the movie resulted in a two-arm injury for star Jeremy Renner.

If you break just one arm while filming a full-length movie about the joys of a group of friends playing a month-long game of tag, then you'll be alright. After all, I think that's why we have two arms. For Tag star Jeremy Renner, however, this was unfortunately a two-arm affair.

"I play a guy, Jerry, that's never been tagged in 30 years," Renner, who will probably grow sick of telling this story any day now, explained on the Tonight Show Tuesday. "He's like the king of the game, untouchable, which is kinda cool. So I do the stunt, there's a stack of chairs 20 feet high and it's supposed to fall over and I'm supposed to ride it down like a surfboard and then keep running. So that happened a couple times and it wasn't quite good enough, so let's do it again, but the hinge broke. Anyway, the stack of chairs is supposed to go and it didn't go and I went...I didn't know I broke both my arms."

Renner even did another take before realizing a hospital visit was in order. To ensure the film's tight shooting schedule wasn't ruined, the filmmakers employed some sly CGI to cover up the fact that Renner was pushing through with a pair of injuries. The most annoying part, it seems, was still managing restroom visits with two less-than-functioning arms. See Renner detail the pains of that and more via the video up top.

Tag, directed by Jeff Tomsic, is based on a real-life group of dudes who keep life interesting by engaging in an annual tag showdown. Renner is joined by Ed Helms, Jon Hamm, Hannibal Buress, and Jake Johnson. Catch it Friday.
