According to a tweet just published by the Associated Press, Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez has passed away after suffering from multiple infections, including one in his lungs. CNN reported just earlier today that the Colombian author's health was "fragile," via a statement from his family.

Márquez was best known as the author of multiple influential novels and short stories, as well as other non-fiction works. It was his 1967 novel One Hundred Years of Solitude that won him the Nobel Prize in 1972, and his subsequent works—including 1985's Love in a Time of Cholera—went on to be highly regarded as some of the best works of modern times. Prior to fiction, Márquez was a journalist.

The author is survived by his wife, Mercedes Barcha, and two sons: Rodrigo and Gonzalo. He was 87.
