But then Simon Cowell left and it got a little boring. Still funny but, after nearly 10 years on the air, the formula has grown tiresome.
But now, thankfully, Cowell is back on our television screens judging a new singing competition, this time a U.S. version of his wildly popular UK singing competition show The X-Factor. Even though it definitely does bear a lot of similarities to Idol, it's different in the sense that it's, well, better. And here are Five Reasons Why The X-Factor Is Better Than American Idol.

Everyone knows that Simon Cowell was the only good reason, apart from the audition week with all the people who are tone-deaf, to watch American Idol. When he left, a large part of the show died, and along with it most of our love. He may have a wack sense of style (Seriously, dude, those shirts have got to go.) but it's hard to argue that he wasn't the best and most honest judge on the show. Plus, he was kind of hilarious. Now that he's on The X-Factor, there's not much we can really see Idol competing with in terms of its judging team. (Also, we'll take L.A. Reid over Randy Jackson anyday, dawg.)
As for Paula, well, she was crazy and that always makes for good TV.
