New York has a history of pickling that goes back more than a hundred years, with delis from Delancey St. to Amsterdam Ave. putting their own spin on barrel-cured cucumbers. Even so, the past decade has opened a whole new generation to the joys of pickling, and moved the game from mom-and-pop basements onto new haute-cuisine levels. And it's not just cucumbers we're talking about; if you can grow it, you can probably pickle it. From pickled tomatoes that'll take your Bloody Mary to the next level to a whole new takes on cured 'cukes, I've rounded up 10 of NYC's best pickle purveyors. These picks include both in-store options and restaurant-specific delicacies, all at the absolute top of the brine game.

Jacob’s Pickles

Website: jacobspickles.com
Standout pickle: Dilly Green Beens

"PIckles for a new generation" may be the slogan of Jacob's Pickles, but its kosher dills perfectly befit its traditional Upper West Side location. While everything Jacob's does is delicious, I have a soft spot for its Dilly Green Beens and Sour Green Tomatoes. I recommend going all-out and getting their "8 types for 16" pickle flight with a healthy amount of beer to wash it down.

Rick’s Picks

Website: rickspicks.com
Standout pickle: Phat Beets

When it comes to top-quality pickled goods you can procure at most grocers, Rick's Picks is at the top of the list. They have a wide selection of goods, from classic sours to a delicious Handy Corn Relish. The so-called People's Pickle is one of the best-tasting sandwich pickles available anywhere, while its award-winning Phat Beets are brined with an unconventional mix of rosemary, ginger, and lemon.

Post Office

Website: postofficebk.com
Standout pickle: Pickled Cauliflower

Post Office is a cozy little Williamsburg cocktail bar that happens to have a fantastic food menu as well. While everything here is great (the deviled eggs may be the platonic ideal of the category), the pickle plate is truly a thing of beauty. Containing a medley of pickles, from cauliflower to onions, it's a veritable cornucopia of vinegary goodness.

Brooklyn Brine

Website: brooklynbrine.com
Standout pickle: Hop-Pickle

Brooklyn Brine isn't afraid to get weird with its pickles in the best possible way. Its Damn Spicy pickles are as hot as you can handle, while the Spicy Maple Bourbon Bread & Butter pickles are a mind-bending flavor explosion. I'm partial to its Hop-Pickle collaboration with Dogfish Head Brewery, infused with the brewery's world-class ingredients.

Joseph Leonard

Website: josephleonard.com
Standout pickle: Gherkins

Joseph Leonard made the genius decision to put a small pot of gherkins at every table in his institution. Though Joseph Leonard's restaurant may be full of world-class dishes, it's the gherkins that get everyone talking about the dining experience at this West Village establishment.

Katz’s Delicatessen

Website: katzsdelicatessen.com
Standout pickle: New Pickle

Any New York pickle list without Katz's Delicatessen is not much of a list at all. Katz's has been pickling on the Lower East Side for more than a hundred years, and its classic deli pickles and tomatoes are some of the best in the world. While the Full Sours may be the classic, the New Pickle offers a refreshing crunch that needs to be experienced as well.

McClure’s Pickles

Website: mcclurespickles.com
Standout pickle: Does Bloody Mary Mixer count?

McClure's Pickles have become the standard of 21st century pickling. Its wide range of wares can be found in bodegas and grocery stores across the country. While its Garlic Dill may be the most well-balanced spears available, its briney-based Bloody Mary Mixer is truly a thing of beauty. At $10 a bottle, it isn't cheap, but just add your favorite vodka (or gin, or tequila) and you can slap together a world-class cocktail right out of your fridge.

The Pickle Guys

Website: pickleguys.com
Standout pickle: Hot New Pickle

Alan Kaufman's Lower East Side institution uses a classic Eastern European recipe. "The pickles are made by letting them sit in salt brine with garlic, spices, and no preservatives. Storing them in barrels, from a day up to six months, the pickles cure as they sit," he explains. That doesn't mean that The Pickle Guys don't mix it up. The Hot New Pickle and Pickled Watermelon are mouthwatering twists on the classics.

Momofuku Ssam Bar

Website: momofuku.com
Standout pickle: Mushroom

Momofuku may be known for all things pork, but David Chang has other hidden talents. Ssam Bar's pickle plate, for example, happens to be one of the great pickle medleys in New York. Though the pickled mushroom stands out as a highlight, every vegetable offers its own delights. Also worth noting is the Momofuku kimchi, which would make any Korean auntie proud.

Estela

Website: estelanyc.com
Standout pickle: Pickled Carrots

Nestled up near the top of Chef Mattos' menu are the pickled carrots. While the veggies may not seem like much on paper, the flavors that emerge from the thinly-sliced carrot are a wonder to behold.
