The NYPD has reportedly taken up security posts outside the New York City offices certain media outlets following their coverage of the Charlie Hebdo shootings which took place in Paris earlier this month.
According to Gawker, the NYPD has assigned officers to guard the officers of at least three outlets, including Gawker, The Daily Beast, and BuzzFeed. Each of the publications republished Charlie Hebdo covers which depicted images of the prophet Mohammad. As an officer told Gawker, this security precaution was not taken in response to a specific threat:
One of the officers assigned to Gawker said the security initiative pertained to media but did not name any outlets that chose not to publish the cartoons. The same officer said the department was not acting on specific threats against any of the outlets. (We’ve reached out to the N.Y.P.D. press office and will update when we hear back.)
