Police in Las Vegas have arrested a suspect in the shooting death of a mother of four last week, authorities say.
According to the Associated Press, 19-year-old Erich Nowsch was arrested at his mother's home yesterday. He's accused of shooting Tammy Meyers, 44, outside of her home last Thursday. Initial reports claimed that Meyers was killed after a a vehicle followed her home after a confrontation. One of the passengers reportedly opened fire, striking her once in the head. She died two days later after being taken off life support.
However, police later claimed that they had learned that Meyers and her armed 22-year-old son, Brandon, went searching for the suspects. Meyers' husband, Robert, told the Associated Press that the family knew the boy, who lived just blocks away. Tammy Meyers had reportedly given him money and food.
"He knew where I lived," Meyers explained. "We knew how bad he was but we didn’t know he was this bad."
Furthermore, the Washington Post says that this, according to Robert Meyers, is why his wife followed the vehicle:
Robert Meyers told reporters that his wife and son went looking for the other driver because the driver knew where the family lived, KLAS-TV reported. Then he told cable television’s Nancy Grace that his wife was trying to move her car away from the home because she didn’t want it to be recognized. He said that’s when the other driver spotted them.
Brandon Meyers, a legal gun owner, fired three to four shots after his mother was struck by the gunman's bullet. "I'd do it for anyone I love," he said, according to the Associated Press.
An emotional Robert Meyers screamed at reporters yesterday, claiming that they had made it seem as if his wife had caused her own death:
As he walked past the yellow police tape, he was stopped by a police officer who tried to calm the man down.
It's OK, the officer could be heard telling him.
No it ain't OK! the husband shouted back, his voice breaking up.
The officer asked the man to step back behind the yellow tape, and he stormed off past reporters.
Are you all happy? You made my wife look like an animal, he told reporters. There's the animal, a block away!
Nowsch has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, and discharging a gun in a prohibited area.
