In September 2012, it was revealed that more than a dozen New York City public schools had started distributing morning after pills such as Plan B. A recent report by the New York Post suggests that those numbers have grown, as 40 school-based health centers have given out 12,721 doses of Plan B in 2011 and 2012. In addition, the Health Department released information showing that teen pregnancy in the city has declined by 27 percent over the past decade.
Still, some parents are outraged that schools are giving out birth control. Mona Davids, who has a 14-year-old and is the president of the NYC Parents Union, said “What gives the mayor the right to decide, without adequate notice, to give our children drugs that will impact their bodies and their psyches? He has purposely kept the public and parents in the dark with his agenda.”
The concern of parents is understood, but this program wasn't exactly a secret and it isn't being forced upon students.
