Michael K. Williams is set to join the cast of the upcoming HBO drama Lovecraft Country, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The show, produced by J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele, centers around Atticus Freeman as he ventures on a road trip across the United States in the 1950s with his friend and uncle in search of his missing father. Their journey leads them down a path where they encounter the racist terrors of white America and some terrifying monsters.
Williams will play Freeman’s father. Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Elizabeth Debicki, Aunjanue Ellis, Jamie Harris, Jonathan Majors, Wunmi Mosaku, and Courtney B. Vance round out the rest of the cast. The film is based on 2016 novel by the same name written by Matt Ruff.
The show’s first episode will be directed by Yann Demange, who helmed the first season of the British drama Top Boy, which will air a third season executive produced by Drake and LeBron James on Netflix. Demange's second feature film, the Matthew McConaughey-starring White Boy Rick, hit theaters last month.
Lovecraft Country is yet another Williams-featuring HBO series. Williams became a household name with his role as Omar Little in The Wire, played Chalky White in Boardwalk Empire, and was inmate Freddy Knight in The Night Of. He's also expected to star in Ava DuVernay's Central Park Five miniseries for Netflix.
