Daniel von Bargen, known for playing George Costanza's boss in Seinfeld and Commandant Edwin Spangler in Malcolm in the Middle, has passed away at age 64. The character actor has more than 80 TV and movie credits dating back to the 70s.

Von Bargen died Sunday after a "long illness." The exact illness hasn't been specified, but von Bargen has suffered from diabetes. He shot himself in the head three years ago in an apparent suicide attempt. von Bargen told the 911 operator he didn't want to go forward with a surgery to amputate two toes because of diabetic complications.

"I feel a huge wave of sorrow and relief at the passing of this remarkable man,” friend and actor Bob Colonna said. "I treasure the years when I worked with him at Trinity Rep and in a couple of TV films. I admire his excellent body of work in the movies. And I mourn for the darkness and pain that were his final years. God bless him. He was a hell of a guy."
