How do you kill a mutant who is, functionally, immortal?

We’re about to find out.

Marvel has announced a four-part comic series entitled The Death of Wolverine, which will—as the title plainly states—play out the demise of the legendary X-Men character. For loyal fans of the series, this news does not actually come as a shock; Wolverine’s end has been teased in recent issues as the character has lost his ability to heal.

Wolverine has actually died before, falling at the hands of both aliens and ninjas in previous mishaps. He even went to hell once. Somehow, though, he has managed to bounce back and return to for the next adventure.

Comic book characters die relatively frequently; Captain America and Spiderman have both bitten the dust before. That, too, makes this not a whopping surprise.

The question on everyone’s mind, though, is this: what does it mean for the movies? No word on that yet, but we’re confident the studio will keep finding ways for us to enjoy Hugh Jackman indefinitely.
