Had enough of American Idol? Ready for Survivor to just go away? Well, you may be getting your wish.
The above analysis from Morgan Stanley indicates that the number of scripted programs is climbing rapidly. The implication, too, would be that the number of reality programs is at least slightly declining as well.
While networks have favored Reality TV for many years due to its relatively low cost and huge track record of success, scripted shows have been making a comeback thanks to critically-acclaimed dramas like Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and even Game of Thrones. Comedies, too, have continued to do well; even network drivel like The Big Bang Theory is doing the highest ratings of its entire run, a sign that scripted programming has never been hotter.
Time will tell if this is merely an aberration, or is in fact the beginning of a return to a wide array of non-reality programming.
