Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like. It’s a cannon that shoots salmon.

A company—aptly named Whooshh Innovations—created the aforementioned cannon as a means of helping salmon migrate upstream despite the increasing prevalence of hydroelectric dams that make such travel impossible. Visually, it is a sight to behold. And that’s why John Oliver and the Last Week Tonight team decided to rig up one of their own.

Last night, Oliver and Co. fired (fake) salmon all across the entertainment landscape, pelting the likes of Jon Stewart, Jimmy Fallon, Tom Hanks, and R2-D2. Obviously a bit more contrived than Oliver’s usual fare like civil forfeiture or Miss America, the salmon cannon nevertheless reminds us that, no matter how bleak life gets, there’s always the possibility you’ll get to enjoy the majesty of a flying fish hitting a celebrity in the face.
