Actor Bob Hoskins—known best to the younger generations as Detective Eddie Valiant in Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Smee in Hook—has died after a bout with pneumonia. He was 71.

Hoskins had retired from acting in 2012 after playing one of the dwarfs in Snow White and the Huntsmen, when he announced that had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He gained mainstream fame in the United States with his role in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, although he had been working extensively long before that.

He appeared in numerous critically-acclaimed British films throughout the decades, and received an Academy Award nomination in 1986 for his role in Mona Lisa.

He is survived by his wife and four children. RIP.
