Robin Williams has died of an apparent suicide.

According to the police report (see the full report here) the actor was found in his home of Tiburon, CA at 12:00 p.m. and declared dead at 12:02 p.m. A phone call to 911 was made at 11:55 a.m. reporting that Williams was unconscious and not breathing.

He was apparently last seen last night at his home with his wife. The Sherriff's Office Coroner Division is currently speculating that Williams' death was a suicide via asphyxiation.

Williams' wife, Susan Schneider released a statement confirming the tragic news:

This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin's family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin's death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.

Additionally, the actor's publicist, Mara Buxbaum told THR:

Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.

What an enormous loss—Robin Williams was one of the greats. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.

UPDATE: TMZ is reporting that Williams died by hanging himself in his home. At this time, it does not appear that he left any sort of suicide note.

Local law enforcement officials will hold a news conference today at 2 PM EST, at which time we'll likely learn more about the investigation and cause of death. It's another sad twist in an already awful story.

UPDATE 2: At today's press conference, Lt. Keith Boyd of the Marin County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Williams died of an apparent hanging.
