Even though its planned press event was derailed by Hurricane Sandy, Google went ahead and digitally unveiled the newest members of its Nexus line of handsets—phones and tablets made under the search giant's watch. Heavily rumored over the past few months, the Nexus 4 smartphone, built by LG, was finally made official, as was the 10-inch brother to the Nexus 7, the Nexus 10. More importantly, the Nexus line, is well, now actually a real line, with products for different consumer groups. Keep reading for a run down of the new Nexus products released today.
Google Nexus 4
The follow-up to the Galaxy Nexus has been in the news a lot over the past few weeks due to leaks and a handset being left in a San Francisco bar. Most of the rumored specs are here: It's made by LG instead of Samsung. It has a 4.7-inch touchscreen display with a 1280x768 resolution and 320ppi. Powering all of it is a Qualcomm quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor, the same one found in LG's Optimus G flagship smartphone. There's also 2GB of ram an 8 MP camera in the back capable of taking HD 1080p video.
On the software front, the Nexus 4 will come loaded with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, and all the latest versions of Google's services as well as a new built-in application called Photo Sphere that allows customers to take full 360-degree images and stitch them into a sphere.
The only downsides? At 139g, it's heavier than the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S III. Thicker, too. There's also No LTE connectivity. The Verge has a great piece as to why it was left out.
The Nexus 4 pricing starts at $299 for the 8 GB model and go to $349 for a model with 16GB. It will only be available unlocked on T-Mobile. It will be available from the Google Play store.
Google Nexus 7
Google's original tablet gets a modest update. It has the same 7-inch display. But it now has Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. For those that need more on-board storage, there's a 32GB version that will cost $249. At the top of range now sits a 32GB model with HSPA+ cellular data connectivity, this will run you $299. As of now, only the 16GB and 32GB wi-fi versions are available for sale from the Google Play store.
Google Nexus 10
Google further expanded its Nexus line with a tablet aimed squarely at the iPad with Retina Display. As its name implies, the new tablet has a 10-inch 2560-by-1600 high-resolution display (Apple's iPad has a 9.7-inch Retina Display with a 2048-by-1536 resolution). It's thinner than the iPad, measuring at a scant 8.9mm (the iPad is 9.4mm), and lighter, too, at just 603 grams (iPad: 652g). On paper, it sounds like the iPads true competitor.
Of course, it runs the latest Android OS, 4.2 Jelly Bean meaing it plays very well with all of the Google services. The camera out back is 5 MP like the iPad, and the front shooter is 1.9 MP. It's all powered by Samsung's dual-core A15 processor. All that of that will cost you $399. If you want to double your internal storage and get a model with 32GB, that will add up to $499. Both will be available from the Google Play store.
