Magnolia Pictures' genre label Magnet has picked up the worldwide rights to distribute Bobcat Goldthwait's dark comedy satire God Bless America. The indie film, which stars Joel Murray and Tara Lynn Barr, debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in the Midnight Madness section this past weekend. Magnet Releasing will handle the film distro here in the U.S.; Magnet International will handle the film's foreign sales.

Murray, who has known the Police Academy funnyman since the mid-eighties, plays Frank, a depressed man who goes on a killing spree with the help of a teenage sidekick (Barr). They both have become so desperate and offended by the increasing stupidity of mainstream American culture that the film's basic premise sounds pretty crazy and broad. Think of it as the Bonnie and Clyde for the 21st Century meets Idiocracy.

God Bless America was written and directed by Goldthwait, who was also behind 2009's pitch-black comedy World's Greatest Dad, starring Robin Williams.
