The 10 Craziest Rumors About the iPhone 5S

Our rumor round-up before the big reveal.

None

It’s been a crazy year since the debut of the iPhone 5 in 2012. Now, the new next generation iPhone(s) is set to be revealed tomorrow—and whichever version of the phone you have in your pocket will officially be obsolete (not the best feeling, is it?) Either way, after months of speculation, leaked photos and videos, we’ll finally find out which rumors everyone got wrong, and what everyone got right. Does Apple has any more surprises up their sleeve? Here are the 10 Craziest Rumors About the iPhone 5S up until now. Will any of them make it to the final design? And which ones are too ahead of their time?

It Will Have Wireless Charging Out of the Box

Wireless charging accessories have been picking up steam, and many thought Apple would be bringing the feature to their newest iPhone. Since new leaked photos show that the iPhone 5S has the same structure as previous editions, and if the new fingerprint scanning feature is true, it's highly unlikely they'll have room to fit wireless charging technology inside that long, but thin, body.

The Phone Was Supposed to Drop in June

One of the earliest rumors to pop up, many thought Apple would be quick to get the new iPhone out to the public. First rumors had it set for a release date in June, as June passed, it got bumped up to August. Then to September. Shows you how eager everyone was to get this phone in their hands.

It Will Come With NFC Capabilities

NFC chips help make payments faster. By placing an NFC chip in a smartphone like the iPhone 5S, you can simply wave your iPhone in front of an NFC reader at a store, and you can be on your way with your goods in hand. The iPhone 5S may come with this technology, but isn't likely, especially since Google recently began pulling back some of its support for it.

It Could Have Been the iPhone Mini

Back in February, rumors started popping up that the next iPhone wouldn't hop on the "bigger is better" bandwagon, and would actually go the "mini' route. As time passed, the rumors began to evolve, and the "mini" began to refer not to size, but price. And that seems to be the case, with the probable annoucement of the iPhone 5C tomorrow.

There Will Be a 128 GB iPhone

We like our storage, but how much is too much? The three storage options for iPhone right now are 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB, but with more and more of us recording more content, is a 128GB iPhone next? It's possible, but will likely be expensive. This could be saved for the "phablet" version of the iPhone, if and when that comes about.

The Camera Will Be Able to Record Things in Slow Motion at 120 FPS

This rumor has been quiet for months now, and though there has been talk about the 5S having a 12MP camera with duel flash, nothing has been said about its recording abilities. A few weeks ago, developer was able to pinpoint a code within iOS 7 beta that held information for a 120 FPS camera, which would mean you'd be able to record in slow-motion, and get smooth film clips. Sounds nice, but it this another feature to be saved for a future iPhone?

The Home Button Will Be made Out of Convex Sapphire

There has been a lot of attention paid to the iPhone 5S home button. Some have speculated months ago that it would be made smaller, in order to fit a bigger screen. Now websites have reported that the phone will come with a convex sapphire home button. So that groove on the button you have known and loved will now stick out in order to read your fingerprints. This could be the case, but another likely option is to have a non-convex scanner placed next to the home button.

iTunes Radio

This one is likely happening: A few months back Apple locked in contracts from big name music distributors with the goal of starting their own Spotify-like radio station. This radio station could see its debut along with the iPhone 5S.

The Screen Will Be the First iPhone to Reach 5 Inches

The current iPhone 5 clocks in at a comfortable 4 inches, after being bumped up from the iPhone 4S size. A rumor earlier in the year said that the iPhone 5S could come in at 5 inches, to help it compete with the whole "phablet" trend that their rival, Samsung, is currently kicking ass in. A 5 inch 5S in unlikely, but rumors as of now point to an entirely new iPhone model coming out in the near future that could be between 4.8 and 6 inches.

Steve Jobs Had a Hand in Making the Next Generation iPhone

San Francisco's district attorney casually mentioned that the next two generations of iPhones have already been designed, during a conversation with an Apple liaison. So, that means, "they preceded Tim Cook." With Steve Jobs knowing he was headed to his deathbed, it wouldn't be surprising if he had spent the time doing what he had always done best: thinking ahead. No telling how much of his ideas specifically made it to the final product.
