Johnny Depp's gangster "comeback" wasn't enough of a draw to beat out the young adult sci-fi franchise Maze Runner at the box office this weekend, but both movies did pretty well overall.

The R-rated Black Mass brought in $23.3 million in its debut for No. 2, even though the reviews haven't been great. That's solid money for any R-rated movie in 2015.

Meanwhile the PG-13 Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials was the weekend winner with $30.3 million, according to the studios' weekend estimates.

M. Night Shyamalan's horror-comedy comeback The Visit continued to go strong in its second weekend as it brought in $10.8 million for third place, bringing its domestic total to more than $41 million for the low budget film.

No. 4 was The Perfect Guy ($10 million) and No. 5 was Everest ($7.1 million).
