People are aging themselves on social media by sharing some of the commercials of their youth that they're nostalgic for.
In a post shared on Monday, Sept. 2, X user @Snow_Blacck asked their followers to "Age yourself with a commercial."
The prompt quickly went viral, with countless users sharing some of the commercials they recalled from when they were younger. The results have included commercials from as recently as '00s, to the late '80s, showing just how wide the age demographics on X, formerly Twitter, vary.
The way it has taken off in such a short amount of time isn't all that dissimilar to journalist Elliott Wilson's "crash out" prompt last month, which saw everyone share their favorite examples of public freakouts, insane interviews, and classic movie scenes.
Check out some of the ways people aged themselves with commercials below.
The 1993 Campbell's Soup commercial starring a chilly snowman
One of the most popular tweets in response to the prompt is a classic '90s commercial from Campbell's Soup, which depicts a snowman coming in from the cold only to melt away when he tries to heat himself up with some soup.
The Turbo Sport Seven commercial from Sprite
Another '90s commercial that garnered a lot of engagement is one from 1996 from Sprite, in which a group of actors mean-mug the camera for a fictional soft drink named Turbo Sport Seven. The commercial then cuts to show the actors expressing frustration at how the shoot is going, especially since one of them even played Hamlet at Cambridge.
Nickelodeon's breakfast PSA
In the mid-'00s, Nickelodeon kicked off its morning programming slot with a PSA encouraging children to eat breakfast every morning. Not technically a commercial, but hey, it's close enough.
Orbit's 'Dirty Mouth Test' commercial
In the '00s, Orbit Gum issued a series of commercials entitled "Dirty Mouth Test," in which actors creatively dodged dropping curse words. The installment from 2007 featured several lines, including "doo doo head cootie queen" and "lint licker," which undoubtedly stuck with a lot of younger millennials and older zoomers.
The annoyingly catchy Mentos commercial featuring a theme song
If you went to school in the early '90s, you probably had to deal with someone out there getting the Mentos "fresh and full of life" song stuck in your head.
When Nickelodeon had its own magazine
Nickelodeon defined the '90s for a lot of kids, so it makes sense that adults today would remember the commercials the channel did for its own magazine. The one from 1997 featured kids trying to convince their parents to subscribe because kids don't have money, duh.
The tense Taco Bell standoff commercial featuring a chihuahua
In the late '90s, Taco Bell briefly had a mascot named Gidget, a tiny chihuahua that loves the fast food chain's food. Always a great way to advertise your food by making it seem appealing to dogs.
Education Connection
I had to be reminded of this awful jingle for Education Connection, and you have to be too.
