Fans Urge ABC to Continue 'Roseanne' Without Its Problematic Star

Some viewers want the show to go on with the rest of the Conner family.

In one fell swoop, ABC canceled Roseanne after the show’s star tweeted out some horribly racist and Islamophobic comments about former Obama aide Valerie Jarrett. But It wasn’t just Roseanne Barr who lost her job as a result of her bigoted Twitter fingers. Her co-stars and showrunners of the series are now suddenly out of work as well, after previously being told the show was picked up for a second season.

From Channing Dungey, President of ABC Entertainment: "Roseanne's Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show."
There was only one thing to do here, and that was the right thing.

Barr expressed sympathy for her co-stars, who lost their jobs because of her. "Don't feel sorry for me, guys!!-I just want to apologize to the hundreds of people, and wonderful writers (all liberal) and talented actors who lost their jobs on my show due to my stupid tweet," she wrote in a since-deleted tweet.

Some fans are urging ABC seek out an alternative option that keeps the show on air without its problematic star, à la House of Cards, pointing to other series that have killed off a main character.

Call it "Not Roseanne" and set the show in an inner city hardware store the Connor family won after Roseanne died in a horrible key duplicating accident.

It worked for “Valerie” into “The Hogan Family”.

Ya know, I didn’t watch “Rosanne”, but I sure would watch “The Connor Family”. https://t.co/XnX1fjX3aL

Laurie Metcalf and John Goodman let me write things for you

Mindy Kaling also offered to write new roles for Barr's co-stars Laurie Metcalf and John Goodman.

In the meantime, celebrities on Twitter continue to react to the cancellation of the reboot. ABC not only canceled the show, but is pulling all of its reruns from cable networks.

Barr was also dropped from her talent agency, ICM Partners. "We are all greatly distressed by the disgraceful and unacceptable tweet from Roseanne Barr this morning," the agency wrote in an internal memo. "What she wrote is antithetical to our core values, both as individuals and as an agency.  Consequently, we have notified her that we will not represent her. Effective immediately, Roseanne Barr is no longer a client."
