Ahead of the release of The Fast & Furious 9: The Fast Saga, Vin Diesel is already talking about the future of the franchise. F9 director Justin Lin is already tapped to direct the tenth film in the series, tentatively scheduled to hit theaters on April 2, 2021, and Vin Diesel has indicated that it'll have such a big story it could be released in two parts.
"I started planning for Fast 10 before we started filming Fast 9. Very much so," Diesel told Total Film, GamesRadar reports. "The universe is so robust and so rich with talent and rich with story that, on one level, it’s totally feasible to have spinoffs, and I think that’s something that is inevitable. Universal deserves it because of how much they’ve invested in this little saga, and it’d be good to give back to Universal. And for the fans, should Fast 10 parts one and two be the conclusion, it would be nice for this world to continue for generations to come."
It's far from a confirmation, but Diesel could have let that detail slip before an official announcement. Fast 10 is intended to be the final installment of the main series, leaving spin-offs like Hobbs & Shaw to continue the franchise. This isn't the first time a studio has split the final film in a series into two, as both Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay received a similiar treatment.
The first trailer for F9 arrived online last week, bringing with it the reveal of John Cena's character Jakob Toretto and the return of Sung Kang's beloved Han Lue. The Lin-directed action epic arrives in theaters May 22.
