James Cameron continues to fuel anticipation for Avatar 2.

On Monday night, the Oscar-winning director appeared at 2020 CES in Las Vegas, where he unveiled concept art for the long-awaited sequel. The four images Cameron presented gave fans an extended look at the fictional world of Pandora, specifically the never-before-seen waterside locations.

In the #Avatar sequels, you won’t just return to Pandora — you’ll explore new parts of the world.

To no one's surprise, the concept art received mixed reactions on social media, with some expressing excitement over the first glimpse, while others were seemingly underwhelmed. The latter group compared the images to that of a video game and suggested they were expecting more from a film that fans have been anticipating for more than a decade.

This will be the greatest movie of the new decade, please make it 4 hours long https://t.co/RUgjXYlTJz

It’s fascinating that 10 years ago images like this would have blown minds. Now it looks like any number of AAA games. Not a knock against Cameron, just pretty amazing that video games have come so far and been allowed to be so creative. https://t.co/BNXq3hgaXU

Cameron previously confirmed that one of the Avatar sequels would place a lot of emphasis on Pandora's aquatic life, as it will include a storyline centered around the "Sea People." The director reportedly began working on the underwater scenes several years ago.

"The other actors are up to three- and four-minute breath holds. We’ve already been doing underwater capture," Cameron told Vanity Fair in 2017. "We did a scene last week with six teenagers, well, actually five teenagers and one 7-year-old underwater holding their breath for a couple minutes and acting, actually doing a dialogue scene under water because they speak kind of a sign language."

So, what else can fans expect from the upcoming sequel? According to Cameron, a lot more machinery.

"I also love the hard stuff. The vehicles, spacecraft, aircraft, ground vehicles, weapons, the hardware. I'm a total geek when it comes to that stuff," Cameron told CNET at 2020 CES. "We have a lot of cool vehicles for you."

Avatar 2 is expected to hit theaters De.17, 2021. The following sequels are scheduled to drop December 2023, December 2025, and December 2027. Stay tuned as more information about the franchise rolls in.
