If you were hoping to be the one who had the best filmed reaction to word of Disney and Sony not landing on an agreement for new Spider-Man movies, now's the time to file that goal away under the Never Gonna Happen category, as Jeff Goldblum has emerged to take the crown.
Goldblum was doing the red carpet thing as part of the D23 Expo in Anaheim in the name of his upcoming The World According to Jeff Goldblum series when, without warning, he was asked for his assessment of the current state of cinematic Spidey.
"Why do you think Spider-Man is such an important part of the MCU? Because there may be a little divorce happening," Variety asked Goldblum, who expressed many different varieties of shock and awe before even offering up an answer.
"No!" he said firmly. "This is the first I've heard of it. I'm crestfallen. Say, what's happened? I didn't know any of this.' After being filled in on recent developments (that have notably inspired thousands of fans to apparently consider storming Sony headquarters), Goldblum continued his state of shock before offering up hope for a happy ending between the two corporations.
"I'm not a businessperson, whatever you're saying is Greek to me . . . I don't know, it'll all work out, I'm sure," he said. "Good luck. They'll figure it out."
Most recent Spider-Man embodier Tom Holland shared his thoughts earlier this month on what's to come, tellingEntertainment Weekly that "we've made five great movies" during which he's had the time of his life.
"Who knows what the future holds?" Holland said. "But all I know is that I'm going to continue playing Spider-Man and having the time of my life. It's going to be so fun, however we choose to do it. The future for Spider-Man will be different, but it will be equally as awesome and amazing, and we'll find new ways to make it even cooler."
While the path forward seems uncertain, fans can take comfort in knowing there at least is a path forward.
In the meantime, dedicate all unused hours to the impending launch of The World According to Jeff Goldblum.
