This exciting pattern of True Detective really, truly looking good again continues in the latest look at the upcoming Mahershala Ali-starring third season.

Up top, catch the second trailer for the HBO series' possible return to greatness. Nic Pizzolatto's latest tale is set in the Ozarks and has also assembled the talent of Carmen Ejogo, Stephen Dorff, Ray Fisher, Rhys Wakefield, Scott McNair, Jodi Balfour, and many more among the recurring cast.

Per Pizzolatto, "everywhere you point the camera" in the Ozarks will give you "treasure." Though HBO and related Powers That Be haven't released much in the way of plot specifics ahead of the series' Jan. 13 grand return, an Esquire-cited press release from the Arkansas Economic Development Commission described the story as one centered on "a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods."

As we've surely discussed at length on multiple cabernet-fueled occasions, True Detective's arguably perfect inaugural season was followed by a sophomore run that—despite the cast's proven talent—simply failed to live up to its own standards. Thankfully, as veteran Season 1 rewatchers can attest, these latest looks at Season 3 definitely evoke the same well-curated uneasiness that made Pizzolatto's award-winning work with Cary Fukunaga so goddamn exciting.

The latest round of True Detective arrives during a particularly stacked year for HBO, who's also readying the final batch of Game of Thrones.
