Jada Pinkett Smith Opens Up About Suicidal Thoughts: ‘Mental Health Is Something We Should Practice Daily’

In a recent post on Instagram, the 46-year-old actress opened up about her personal struggle with mental health in light of the recent deaths of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain.

Jada Pinkett Smith never shies away from sharing the personal ins and outs of everything—from her career and parenting to sex. In a recent post on Instagram, the 46-year-old actress opened up about her personal struggle with mental health in light of the recent deaths of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain.

“One thing I’ve learned in my life over the years is that mental health is something we should practice daily, not just when issues arise,” she captioned a black and white set of photos featuring the two late celebrities. “We should take care of our mind and spirit in the same way we do our body. With the suicides of Kate and Anthony it brought up feelings of when I was in such despair and had considered the same demise...often.”

Spade was found dead in her Park Avenue apartment on the morning of June 5. Three days later, on June 8, Anthony Bourdain was found dead in France. Both deaths have been ruled suicides.

The quick succession of loss shocked the world. Bourdain had previously been open about his struggle with addiction and mental illness. Meanwhile, Spade’s husband Andy wrote the following after her suicide: “Kate suffered from depression and anxiety for many years. She was actively seeking help and working closely with her doctors to treat her disease, one that takes far too many lives.”
