Boots Riley’s feature directorial debut Sorry To Bother You will be hitting theaters on June 29. Annapurna Pictures set the film’s summer release following the shining critical acclaim it received at the Sundance Film Festival last month.
The film stars some of Hollywood’s biggest names right now, including Get Out and Atlanta actor Lakeith Stanfield and Call Me By Your Name’s Armie Hammer. The cast also includes Tessa Thompson, Steven Yeun, Jermaine Fowler, Omari Hardwick, and Terry Crews. Ahead of its summer debut, the film will also make an appearance at the annual South By Southwest film festival in March.
Sorry To Bother You is set in present-day Oakland, Riley’s hometown, and follows Stanfield’s character Cassius Green who is a black telemarketer. According to the film’s description Green, “discovers a magical key to professional success - which propels him into a macabre universe.”
Some early reviews and comments online have called the film very weird and funny, while also alluding to underlying serious social commentary. It even got a co-sign from Get Out director Jordan Peele.
