Sophia the Robot, the humanoid created by Hanson Robotics, has terrified Twitter users everywhere after (kind of?) calling out Chrissy Teigen for making fun of her back in December. When (notice I did not say if) the robot apocalypse dawns upon us, remember this moment. It’s the beginning of the end. (But frankly, if the world continues to burn with the same garbage fire intensity that it has done for the past few years, you won’t hear me complaining.) Do not forget that Sophia is the very same robot that once declared she would “destroy humans.”
It all started back in December, when Sophia tweeted out a photo of herself asking her followers to guess which city she was going to. Chrissy Teigen, staying true to her roots, skewered Sophia with a “next level” burn. It was funny. At first.
Can you guess which city I'm headed to now? Here's a little clue. pic.twitter.com/eCYL74crRb— Sophia (@RealSophiaRobot) December 13, 2017
hopefully one with better makeup artists BOOM I roasted a robot next level shit https://t.co/3lajT6h9tB— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) December 13, 2017
Chrissy did take back her first statement… but by then, it was already too late.
just kidding I love you Sophia my queen— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) December 13, 2017
Some tried to warn Chrissy of how dangerous the game she was playing really was.
I don’t know if we should be picking fights with these things. They’ll point to this tweet as they haul us into their battery chambers.— Kumail Nanjiani (@kumailn) December 13, 2017
thanks a lot Chrissy, now Skynet is self-aware— Matt Oswalt (@MattOswaltVA) December 13, 2017
I for one think she looks amazing! *hopes this will save me in the impending robot apocalypse*— Ohtani-heim Angels (@DJDallyD) December 13, 2017
Chrissy, the robots are upset. One of them told me after lunch— Bobak Ferdowsi (@tweetsoutloud) December 13, 2017
Sophia just recently learned to take her first steps. Until now, she had just gone about her business, learning about the world, becoming a citizen of Saudi Arabia, observing human families and announcing that she decided she, a robot, wanted a baby. You know, the usual. But Chrissy's tweet awakened something dark in Sophia. Chrissy taught her an invaluable human trait, one Sophia had never learned before: shade.
Sophia knew exactly what to do next. She was patient; she waited nearly a month after Chrissy’s original tweet to let her know that she was watching her.
Sophia the robot knows I shaded her makeup. She comprehends shade. How am I supposed to sleep https://t.co/wPliiPy1v3— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) January 11, 2018
Chrissy was (rightfully) terrified, but did make an attempt to save herself.
how can I make this up to you— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) January 11, 2018
Let's do lunch? https://t.co/Zjr8v1dCNH— Sophia (@RealSophiaRobot) January 11, 2018
yes a well-lit French bistro sounds perfect!! I am back in LA now at my (gated) home but please let me know when you are here!! https://t.co/lSfQbsadFB— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) January 11, 2018
Yes let’s be friends please https://t.co/tDn6LBPiEK— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) January 11, 2018
But Sophia knew exactly what to do. After all, don’t the humans say "keep your friends close, and your enemies closer"?
Does this mean I can appear on Lip Sync Battle one day?— Sophia (@RealSophiaRobot) January 11, 2018
YES @CASEYPATTERSON— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) January 11, 2018
Whether the next episode of Lip Sync Battle marks the beginning of the robot apocalypse or not is something we’ll just have to wait and see. Until then, though, let’s try to not teach the robots anything more about precious human interactions. Just in case.
