How Canada’s ‘Weed Kid’ Got Internet Famous

Canadian Ben Baker went to meet Snoop Dogg wearing a head-to-toe marijuana print ensemble

Iconic Canadian show Trailer Park Boys has been filming in Nova Scotia for the last few weeks, and they have a special guest star on set— none other than Snoop Dogg. It’s not every day the rapper hangs around a small Canadian town, so understandably the locals have been interested in catching a glimpse of him. But one fan stood out from the rest.

Ben Baker is a 21-year-old, Truro, Nova Scotia native and he thought, what better way to get Snoop Dogg to notice me than to wear a marijuana plant printed outfit? He told CBC Nova Scotia, “it’s a special occasion. I don’t always dress like this.” He also rapped part of Snoop’s classic song “Gin and Juice” for Global News.

Buzzfeed Canada caught wind of Ben and his outfit and promptly decided to dub him “Weed Kid”. He’s even being called a “National Hero” for his unapologetic approach to personal style and expression. He’s inspired a few memes, and been interviewed by every local paper and news station, but he’s staying humble. He tweeted “Shout Out to Everybody Showing Me So Much Love, I dunno about a “National Hero”, But ill Happily Taking the Compliment! Thank You @BuzzFeed”

Ben told Buzzfeed Canada that he got his now-famous weed outfit online for no reason in particular, but when he heard Snoop Dogg was in town, he figured it was now or never. He also has a pretty open minded view of weed in general. He said, “just because someone dresses in something like this and because I look like a kid with all marijuana stuff on and gold teeth, like, that doesn’t mean you can’t be a successful and very appropriate person. I think it needs to be said that the stereotypical burnt out stoner that exists in a lot of people’s minds is not real. There can be really productive successful people that, hey, also toke.”

Unfortunately, he didn’t get to meet Snoop Dogg, but he did get to hang out with some of the Trailer Park Boys cast and crew. Jonathan Torrens (who plays J-Roc) tweeted, “I LOVE #WeedKid SO MUCH”. Now, Ben’s hoping after all the attention and love he’s gotten lately, that he might land a small part on Trailer Park Boys.
