Just a few days after instituting a curfew in Ferguson, Mo. to control an area upset by the fatal shooting of unarmed teenager Michael Brown by a local police officer, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has decided to end it. The Aug. 9 killing of the unarmed Brown by Officer Darren Wilson has led to protests, standoffs between police and demonstrators, and acts of vandalism.
The Associated Press reports that Nixon announced in a statement the midnight to 5 a.m. curfew is no longer in effect. Though Nixon requested the services of the National Guard in Ferguson last night, he claims they will only have a limited role and take orders from the State Highway Patrol.
This comes after authorities deployed rubber bullets and tear gas on protesters prior to the curfew last night.
