Proving once again that it's better to be funny and blow shit up than it is to simply blow shit up, Guardians of the Galaxy has overtaken Captain America: The Winter Soldier as the highest-grossing movie of the year.

Guardians has now earned $274.6 million domestically, compared to Cap's $259.7 million.

The Labor Day weekend saw another weak showing from new movies at the box office. Guardians was No. 1 with more than $21 million this weekend, while another holdover, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, was No. 2 with $11.7 million.

If I Stay,  was No. 3 in its second weekend of release with $9.3 million, new Paris catacombs horror flick As Above, So Below was No. 4 with $8.3 million and Let's Be Cops was No. 5 with $8.2 million.

November Man, with Pierce Brosnan playing a former CIA agent who gets pulled back in earned  $7.7 million, and the 30th anniversary re-release of Ghostbusters is expected to bring in $2 million over the four-day weekend.

It's only August, but considering that summer blockbuster season is officially over, Guardians will most likely retain its title as the top-grossing film of the year.
