When Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) debuted on The CW's highly underrated (dare we even say, at times, stellar?) supernatural melodrama The Vampire Diaries during the tail end of the second season, producers expected the mythical original vampire (and only vampire-werewolf hybrid) wouldn't survive the third season. Then, during that year, his mythology expanded with a rich history. It turns out he's the bastard son of an ancient family, also original vamps (and thus, virtually indestructible), and a brat with abandonment issues so intense that he uses special daggers to render his siblings comatose when they go against him.

Fast forward a season and the Mikaelsons, with their supernatural Dynasty-esque drama (which include their parents, fellow immortals who view them as abominations that must be put down), had essentially monopolized the show from characters who existed a full two seasons before their introduction. Much of the blame can be attributed to Morgan and his co-stars Daniel Gillies and Claire Holt, older brother Elijah and younger sister Rebekah, who immediately inhabited the roles with assured performances that made them fan favorites. The show couldn't dare kill them off, and their dysfunctional dynamics provided too much material to write them out. The solution: a spin-off, of course.

Now you can find Klaus, his two remaining siblings, and his werewolf baby mama Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) on their own on in the simply titled The Originals. There, they lord over New Orleans (flashbacks reveal they actually built the city before fleeing from their father centuries later) and continue to stab each other in the back while occasionally uniting against common enemies.

If you don't watch, then you're missing out on one of the most entertaining dysfunctional families on TV. Allow us to explain why:

Klaus paralyzes his siblings and stores them in boxes for days-years-decades-centuries when they "disagree."

Exhibit A:

Exhibit B:

Exhibit C:

He also plays the protective big brother role a little too intensely...

...which often causes Rebekah to lash out like this:

Kol wasn't too nice to his little sister's love interests either.

They still bickered during the brief time the entire family reunited under the same roof.

Elijah has a thing for the girl who's carrying his younger brother's baby...

...and Klaus is all pretend I-don't-give-a-fuck.

But of course deep down he's really insecure about his role in the family:

Which he vents about through writing his memoirs, via stenographer no less, confirming he's a giant douche.

You can see why his baby mother would go for the other brother:

But really, who can blame these three for all the fuckshit they engage in when both parents tried to kill them?

After centuries of running from their father, Mother Mikaelson came back just to try and kill all her children.

At the end of the day though, family trumps all.
