A group of scientists monitoring Australia's shark activity has found a better use of Twitter than just silly jokes and hashtags. In the face of mounting attacks from Great Whites, scientists in the province of Western Australia have tagged some 320 sharks with geolocation devices that will alert oceangoers of the sharks' locations via Twitter.
Surf Life Saving Western Australia's Twitter account (SLSWA) will broadcast a shark's position, size, and species as it approaches the shore, warning people to stay away with helpful up-to-the-minute alerts. As Gizmodo notes, it's a considerably less bloody approach than the culling alternative to which Australia has taken recently.
Maybe in due time the sharks will tweet their favorite Drake lyrics, too?
