The 25 Best Movies of Summer 2013

If the superheroes couldn't save us, who would?

None

The summer isn't over yet, but the hottest movie season of the year is coming to a close. May through August is usually a time for big studios to bring out their big guns, and suffice it to say, we were pretty disappointed with what they had to offer. From The Lone Ranger to R.I.P.D., the past few months were marked by mindnumbing box office duds that tested a cinephiles faith in the movies.

Fortunately, however, the indie fim scene reminded us that not all motion pictures have to be made with tens of millions of dollars to be memorable and affecting. We were introduced to newcomers like Ain't Them Bodies Saints' David Lowery and Fruitvale Station's Ryan Coogler who make us optimistic about the future of quality cinema.

As we prep for the Oscar-worthy movie months—everything from Blue Is the Warmest Color to The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is dropping before the end of the year—we're looking back on the pictures that salvaged the summer. These are the 25 Best Movies of Summer 2013.
