YouTube, along with a host of other social sites, has played crucial role in getting messages and stories from perilous locations out to the world. Sometimes, though, those videos can place certain people in danger. To help these citizen journalists continue to do good work, YouTube has unveiled a face-blurring tool that allows users to "obscure faces within videos with the click of a button.

YouTube took to its blog today to describe how the tool works:

None

The tool's not only for those positing videos from protests. As YouTube explains, it's also for people who want to post videos with out putting anyone on blast: "Share the winning point in your 8-year-old’s basketball game without broadcasting the children’s faces to the world."

Keep in mind that the technology is new and therefore not perfect.
