36. Nikki Tinker
Office: Unsuccessful Candidate for Congress from Tennessee
Why You Should Vote For Her: Hold on here, we're not saying anyone should vote for, or should have voted for, Nikki Tinker. In 2008 she ran against Steve Cohen in the Democratic primary (the de facto election as there was no chance of serious Republican opposition) and she looked viable because some black Christian leaders in the majority-black district never quite warmed to their white Jewish representative. So it was a race thing – it was always a race thing – but the trick is you can't come out and say it's a race thing. When Tinker ran ads that tried to link Cohen to the KKK and suggested he was against prayer in school because he's Jewish, the national media called her out on it and her supporters and endorsers went cold on her. Still, she was hot.
