1. The Jump

First Appeared In: Frogs (1978)
It all started (or at least became popular) with the little digitized fella from Pitfall. We’re not sure he could leap over four pizza boxes and a Playboy, but getting over a few chasms and clearing some logs sparked a trend. A few years later (1985, for anyone keeping track at home), a certain mustachioed plumber outleapt Kobe Bryant to down Bowser. And today? The jump has begotten the double-jump (Castlevania), the jump-kick (Final Fight), and Batman’s cool little hang-glider trick in the upcoming Batman: Arkham City. Oh, Pitfall protagonist, this is how you know you’ve made it: When you’re inspiring the Batman.
