6. The Wheel of Time (PC, 1999)

Sandwiched amidst the releases of Unreal Tournament and Quake 3, the first-person shooter based on Robert Jordan’s eponymous series sadly had no chance at selling well enough to warrant additional sequels. Yet, The Wheel of Time is considered one of the more underrated games in the last 20 years of video game development, deftly utilizing the series' massive world and, best of all, giving you the cliff notes of the existing nine novels in the series. It’s like high school all over again!
