This game's hopes for being pegged a watershed moment in platforming were crushed (puns!) with the release of Super Paper Mario just a month earlier, but consider its placement here a concession. Like Nintendo's title, Crush is a platformer that requires players to switch between 2D and 3D environments in order to progress through the game and uncover secrets. It also stars a protagonist who suffers from insomnia caused from repressed memories, and gets additional brownie points for not featuring Dr. Phil as an annoying in-game therapist who has no actual doctorate degree whatsoever.

FUN FACT: The game's various levels are inspired by artists like M.C. Escher and Tim Burton (yes, people, film can be art). Escher's puzzles were also the basis of Echochrome, which narrowly missed this list.
