Seeing Cities Aviv live was one of the most memorable music experiences I’ve had this year. If you think his experimental, noisy hip-hop is overwhelming on record, then you’ll probably want to bring earplugs if you ever catch him in concert. While so many rap shows are about bravado, stage presence, and crowd interaction, Cities Aviv’s is about engulfing everyone in the room with a chaotic ocean of ebbing and flowing sounds. And it’s pretty incredible.
A lot of new acts in hip-hop are opening up to trying new things and standing out, but it’s not easy to be this different. To Cities Aviv, it seems to come naturally. If you’re not familiar, check out his new mixtape, Black Pleasure, below.
