20 Unmissable Record Store Day Releases

This Saturday, April 19, is Record Store Day. Here are 20 unmissable releases.

On the third weekend of April of every year comes the day that all music loving record collectors should be especially excited about. This Saturday, April 19, 2014, is the seventh annual Record Store Day. Each year exclusive vinyl comes out specifically for this occasion. Many of the releases have a very limited supply which makes each find not only exciting but also a rare collectible. This year there are lots of anniversary edition albums being released for fans, from legendary artists like Outkast, Jimi Hendrix, and Nirvana.

Now don’t just try your luck without any previous planning. With such limited supply of everything, you need to have a proper strategy in place. Have no fear, we’ve put together a list of some of the releases that you need to be on the lookout for. Be sure to check out the official Record Store Day website for the full list of releases, though, and be aware that some releases are regional only. If you're really set on a certain record, be sure to phone your local store to see if they are actually going to stock it.

Oh, and remember: every day that your local store is open is its own little Record Store Day, so don't make it a one off visit.

2. LCD Soundsystem - The Long Goodbye: LCD Soundsystem Live At Madison Square Garden LP

Label: PLGUK

Amount: 3000

LCD Soundsystem will be releasing the audio of their last performance ever at Madison Square Garden as a vinyl box set. The entire 5 LP set was mixed and produced by James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem and is about four hours long. The Long Goodbye includes 28 tracks from their farewell show on April 2, 2011. A true piece of music history.

Also, if you're New York based there is an LCD Soundsystem exhibition at Rough Trade in Brooklyn opening April 19 and running until May 7.

3. Outkast - Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik LP

Label: Legacy

Amount: 4000

With Outkast being on a huge comeback festival tour this year, it’s no surprise that they would be included on this list. The release comes just in time for the celebration of the album’s 20th anniversary. Luckily there are 4000 copies so the real fans still have a chance to get the duo’s debut album on vinyl before all the newbies from Coachella get their hands on it.

4. Gil Scott Heron - Nothing New LP

Label: XL Recordings

Amount: 3000

On what would have been Gil Scott-Heron’s 65th birthday—April 1, 2014—it was announced that a posthumous album would be released. Nothing New contains previously unreleased performances by the late jazz poet/musician. The record includes stripped down versions of some of his classics, which were performed in 2008 during the I'm New Here sessions at New York's Looking Glass studios.

5. Disclosure - "Apollo"

Label: Cherrytree/Interscope

Amount: 2500

Disclosure’s single “Apollo” can only be found as a bonus track on the Target deluxe edition of their debut album Settle. Now, it's being pressed to vinyl for the first time, and if the duo continue to see the sort of success they had in the past year, this could be a pretty sought after record in 5 years or so. "Apollo" is not Disclosure at their most pop friendly, instead it's a gritty stomper to remind everyone that they don't need a vocalist on their tracks to make it great.

6. The Notorious B.I.G. - Life After Death

Label: Rhino

Amount: 4500

The fact that Life After Death was released only two weeks after Biggie’s death makes it all seem a bit eerie, but that only makes fans appreciate the album even more. And to top it all off, this is a on triple clear vinyl. Getting this classic album on vinyl would absolutely be a win for the day.

7. The Doors - Weird Scenes Inside The Goldmine LP

Label: Rhino

Amount: 2650

For this year’s edition of Record Store Day, only 2650 copies of The Doors’ Weird Scenes Inside The Goldmine are being released. The double vinyl will be a translucent amber swirled disc and will be the same length and contain the same tracks as the original release from 1972.

8. Fleetwood Mac - “Dragonfly / The Purple Dancer” 7"

Label: Rhino

Amount: 2600

In 1970, Fleetwood Mac released their single “Dragonfly” after frontman Peter Green left the group. This single has never been commercially released in the US until now. It only later appeared on their Greatest Hits album. This is also the first time the single appears as a 7” vinyl. The B-side of the single includes “The Purple Dancer."

9. Nirvana - “Pennyroyal Tea / I Hate Myself and Want To Die” 7"

Label: Geffen

Amount: 6000

Any Nirvana album is pretty much a collectible at this point but this release comes at a really special time. Only a few weeks after the 20th anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death, this is definitely something Nirvana fans will want to have in their possession, especially as original plans for this to be a single single in 1994 were cancelled due to Kurt Cobain's death.

10. Sky Ferreira - Night Time, My Time LP

Label: Capitol

Amount: 800

When Sky Ferreira first dropped her debut album, she announced that there would be no vinyl releases due to problems with her record label. But she was determined to make it happen, even promising to fans that she would get them pressed herself. Well the vinyl is finally here, but only 800 copies! An added bonus: These releases will be pictures discs instead of the usual all black surface.

11. HAIM - "Forever"

Label: Columbia

Amount: 3500

In the past two years the three sisters of HAIM have gone from little known to basically household names. All of that success started with their debut single “Forever." Columbia will releasing over 3000 copies of the girls’ first single for fans to add to their collection, with an additional Giorgio Moroder remix and "Edge."

12. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts - Glorious Results of a Misspent Youth LP

Label: Blackheart Records

Amount: 4000

There are quite a few albums on the list of this year’s Record Store Day releases that are celebrating anniversaries. Another celebratory release is Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ Glorious Results of a Misspent Youth. This album celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. As a staple album for the early punk era, this is a definitely a great find.

13. Badbadnotgood - “Can’t Leave The Night” / “Sustain”

Label: Innovative Leisure

Amount: 300

With their third album III set to drop in May, BadBadNotGood’s first singles “Can’t Leave The Night” and “Sustain” are being released on 12” vinyl. Both singles incorporate the jazz/hip-hop fusion that their fans already know and love. But supply is really limited—only 300 copies to be exact. With such a limited amount of copies, you better start strategizing now if you plan to go home with this.

14. Tame Impala - Live Versions LP

Label: Interscope

Amount: 5000

Tame Impala will be releasing a live album of a performance in Chicago from last year. Kevin Parker of Tame Impala revealed in a press release that he specifically chose live versions that sounded significantly different than the album version. Live Versions is meant to give fans something they’ve only experienced at a live show, instead of a re-release of what they already have.

15. Ice T - Greatest Hits LP

Label: Rhino

Amount: 2700

This greatest hits album from original gangster Ice-T has never been released on vinyl, and this is a Record Store exclusive. With tracks like "Make It Funky," "I'm Your Pusher (GH Edit)," "Power," and "The Girl Tried To Kill Me" the album is being released by Rhino Records, previously known for mostly reissuing old R&B records.

16. Oasis - "Supersonic" 7"

Label: Big Brother Records

Amount: 3500

A 20th anniversary edition of Oasis’ debut single “Supersonic” is being released for this year’s Record Store Day. The full Definitely Maybe vinyl is set to released in May, but unlike everyone else, Oasis co-founder Liam Gallagher isn’t all that excited. He took to his Twitter telling fans not to buy it: "HOW CAN YOU REMASTER SOMETHING THAT'S ALREADY [BEEN] MASTERED. DONT BUY INTO IT. LET IT BE."

Nothing says serious business like an all-caps tweet. Anyway, although Oasis are really just shouty, annoying old men these days, owning their debut single is pretty cool.

17. Eric B. & Rakim - “Paid in Full (Coldcut Remix)” 7"

Label: Get On Down

Amount: 800

Originally only available in the UK, the Coldcut remix version of Eric B. & Rakim’s classic “Paid in Full” is being reissued specially for Record Store Day. Rakim himself has been quoted many times claiming that this is the best remix he’s ever heard. Using a hundred dollar bill as the cover art is definitely fitting—with only 800 copies being released this is sure to be very valuable.

18. Johnny Cash - With His Hot and Blue Guitar LP

Label: ORG Music

Amount: 6000

With His Hot and Blue Guitar is the debut album from country legend Johnny Cash. The record has been out of print for a while now but is making a return for this special occasion. Featuring classics like "Cry, Cry, Cry," "I Walk The Line," and "Folsom Prison Blues" this remastered edition is expected to be issued on blue vinyl.

19. Jimi Hendrix - Live at Monterey LP

Label: Legacy

Amount: 6000

In 1967 Jimi Hendrix appeared at the Monterey Pop Festival and gave one of his most memorable performances ever. This album includes the live version of “Wild Thing” where he set his guitar on fire before smashing it. Although a live album of this famous performance was already made in 1986, this heavyweight reissue is surely a must-have for any Hendrix fan.

This release is "Record Store Day first" so will be more widely available generally 4-6 weeks after RSD '14.

20. Rick James - “You and I / Fire and Desire”

Label: Motown Records

Amount: 2000

Rick James’ number one single from 1978, “You and I” gets a special 12" re-release with “Fire and Desire” for this year’s Record Store Day. “Fire and Desire”—his duet with Teena Marie—was never actually put out at as a single but found it’s way onto the R&B charts anyway. If there are two Rick James singles you should want to own on vinyl, these are them. The fact that they’re packaged together only makes it that much sweeter.

21. Shlohmo - Shloh-Fi EP

Label: Error Broadcast

Amount: 500

Error Broadcast will be re-releasing Shlohmo’s debut EP Shlo-Fi as a special release for Record Store Day. Although the 2009 EP was already re-released in 2011, this time the reissue includes extra remixes. The original EP is on blue vinyl, while a yellow vinyl contains the remixes. Five years later and Shlohmo has gone on to bigger and better things, but you can own this piece of his past.
