Yesterday, Cody Chesnutt released his sophomore album, Landing on a Hundred, a work ten years and one successful Kickstarter campaign in the making. Chesnutt recorded a live rendition of one of the album’s standouts, “That’s Still Mama,” for Okayplayer TV on a rooftop in Manhattan while he was in New York for a live appearance with the gifted, eclectic Meshell Ndegeocello. On the record, “That’s Still Mama” brims with horns and big soul band bravado; on the rooftop, Chesnutt strips it to bare essentials, guitar and voice. It remains as powerful in reduction as in its place on Landing‘s rich soul spectrum.
