Video Premiere: Witty Rock - "Benzo"

In the mood for a nightmare? Watch the harrowing new video for rapper Witty Rock's druggy single "Benzo."

When I asked Baltimore rapper Witty Rock what his song and accompanying video for “Benzo” were about, he responded: “It’s the transitioning and questioning stage in their career where they question the direction of their art as well as their lives. ‘Benzo’ represents trying to find some peace in all of the complication that goes on in the mind of a artist”

Explicitly, of course, “Benzo” is about drugs, their palliative effects, and the paranoia they can produce. The video depicts a loose semi-nightmare, a collection of grim, claustrophobic images—even the performance footage feels ripped from the world of a horror movie, dark-lit rooms and snowy landscapes replacing usual rap tropes. It’s another gripping, lo-fi creation from the 9BMC crew (a favorite of 5 On It‘s past).
