The sun is swirlin’ round like a whirlpool
Everything you need is right above you
So leave me where they know not a virtue
So I can learn that life is more than miracles
–Kendall Elijah
Releasing music only intermittently over the last three years, Maryland-bred, Louisville-based rapper Kendall Elijah returns with a gorgeous, surreal video for hazily sunny new single “Whirlpools.” It’s a visually striking journey, consisting mostly of Kendall’s face bathed in purple light before switching to brief epilogue that turns the camera’s lens to the skies. The music itself is a crossroads of fuzzy psychedelia, dense rapping, and raw singing—a blend that feels like it exists closer to a continuum with artists like Tame Impala or Washed Out than any particular rapper (with the exception of rappers like Cities Aviv and Lushlife).
“Whirlpools” is a beautiful marriage of visual abstraction and deeply personal, impressionistic music. Watch it above and grab the free download below.
