Since the emergence of James Blake (and, really, since Burial and Jamie Woon joined forces), a subgenre of male pop has been forming in loose constellation. A name escapes it: Electronically-inclined, often R&B-influenced, rooted in singer/songwriter tradition, and often tossing even its own amorphous rules aside. Blake and Woon might be the old standard bearers by now, as SOHN, Fyfe, Astronomyy, Josef Salvat, Jaymes Young, Jack Garratt and represent the current bumper crop, playing to the fringes and stitching together unusual influences.

Add Ireland’s Talos to the above mix. Debut single “Tethered Bones” is the sort that sends bloggers scrambling to the books in search of synonyms for “ethereal” and “atmospheric.”

With good reason.

“Tethered Bones” uses swelling synthesizers to craft a gorgeous anthem. The song embodies the concept of love’s totalizing grip–as Talos describes it, “how a relationship can engulf and transform you: what it can and does take away. What you lose and what you gain.”
